Where is Resolute?

Tracking Resolute's current location can be done using a few methods. The easiest for those ashore is here:

AIS

AIS is a radio-based location communication system. It requires an AIS Transceiver to send and receive location and other information, exchanging this data with other AIS transceivers within the range of a VHF radio signal. In general, that range is twenty to fifty miles. My guess is you do not have an AIS transceiver. Luckily, there are services which use base stations on land to receive AIS signals, and then share them over the internet. It's important to remember that these base stations are not able to receive signals from far offshore. Some vessels transmit their AIS data sent and received over satellite signals which are then routed to the internet. As of now, Resolute does not have this capability.

Vessel Finder is a free internet-based AIS reporting system. Once you open it, there is a map showing signals received in that area. In the upper right corner of the map is a search box. You will want to search for Resolute using the MMSI number:

338056788

Live Camera

Newburyport has a few live cameras. One does cover the AYC mooring area. If you look very closely, you might be able to see Resolute on her mooring.

Here's one from the roof of Merrimac Mills. Resolute often appears near the lower right corner:

Satellite Phone

Satellite phones have changed the nature of long distance sailing. We looked closely at two options. One is this:

IsatPhone 2.1 Satellite Phone

It's a high-quality phone that can be used with different service providers. The hardware is expensive but it is reliable and easily portable.

The other option is:

Predict Wind Iridum Go

It comes bundled with our preferred weather routing software. It has a large user community of fellow sailors which provides valuable support.

In the end, we went with the Iridium Go from Predict Wind. We also went with the complete package that included thea remote antenna and charging cradle so we can keep the phone below decks and ensure a clear signal. It also came with a YB3i unit which is an all-in-one GPS Satellite transmitter which copled with a monthly service, will constantly transmit Resolute's position. It's the YB3i unit that provides the hourly updates to our position:
